Tap to launch this app. Spy Mouse's familiar structure is spiced up by the surprise inclusion of the occasional kitty boss fight.

After plugging through a world's stages, the player must take down a big boss cat via a two-stage final mission. These boss fights introduce new and interesting mouse-and-cat dynamics that sadly don't carry over to the standard levels. They're one-off stages and they're the best parts of the game. The freshness of boss fights is welcome largely because the missions leading up to the boss fights grow tedious. Spy Mouse has no snap - no mechanical hook.

The visuals are sharp and polished; it's clear the game has a bigger budget than most iOS titles. But sadly there's no heart. The bite-sized levels and frequent checkpoints on longer stages make mobile play convenient, but the pace of the game is ponderous, largely due to elaborate animations and several menu screens separating stages.

Spy Mouse is too slow to usher players from one stage to the next. Combined with the slower pace of later levels, which require more waiting for the patrolling cats, Spy Mouse's sluggishness wears. It lacks the immediate pleasure of iPhone's most addictive games, feels more like peeling an orange than popping orange Tic-Tacs.

Spy Mouse is adorable, but then most iPhone games are. It's hard to pick on obvious faults, 'cause they don't exist. And that's not the only pop-up button that attempts to spend without warning. But I would be willing to ignore the nuisance, if the game was top-tier.
